February 15th, 2010Not all the technical jargon about digital video drive you crazy?
Read on for a healthy mind and an explanation of digital video compression.
What is video compression and why?
Without video compression, video on the Internet is not merely possible. This is what is important. Video files are huge. Download times for the raw uncompressed video would be so high that nobody wants problems, even on broadbandspeed.
Compression is the process of taking the large files, and makes the file size to maintain decent image. Compression works by first analyzing complex and detailed video signals. Parts of the signal is not visible to the human eye is reduced. Detail and resolution is lost, but hopefully not too much. Different compression methods select different data to be lost, and this causes variable results.
Often a video signal is compressed, sowhen it is opened and played, and some of the decompressed and lost information is restored.
Codec, which is it?
Codec is a concept that combines the basic words compression and decompression. What is compressed to uncompressed. To do this correctly the machine to read the file you want to reverse the process used for compression. Therefore, the two go together like a lock and key and type the word codec.
Compatibility issues with editing software or playequipment, methods of compression and decompression are incompatible. This happens often and creates pleasure which is known as headache video maker. I know of no serious video-maker who has not fought for a spot with no compression of incompatibility.
Different software platforms and file formats that produce diverse, partly from their codec. So, if the incompatibility arises, you can almost always be traced back to the codec.
Seldom do not have to worryyou with information about which codec is used when, but be aware of the compatibility problems can help find you through the process of video production, when the inevitable problems arise.
